How AI is Shaping Unrealistic Sneaker Designs Beyond Manufacturing Limits

Through this blog, I would like to take a look at the clash between digital imagination and physical manufacturing capabilities in sneaker production.

Sneaker culture has always pushed the boundaries of style and technology. Today, artificial intelligence is taking this creativity to new heights by generating designs that challenge the very limits of what footwear factories can produce.

AI generated sneaker concepts and designs

The Rise of AI in Sneaker Design

Since the last few months, I have been getting sampling requests from young sneaker enthusiasts. They share AI generated pictures and claim those to be their exclusive self-designed concepts. They do not realize that all AI designs have something in common - unrealistic upper-sole combinations with impractical silhouettes and materials. They do not understand that their AI generated designs are only imaginary and not practical to produce.

People have shared designs that had weird elements like hidden LEDs all across a sword shaped shoe upper or glow in the dark concepts that felt stupid to say the least. A teenager wanted me to produce a range of sneakers that had a blinking or flashing logo (as if shoes are electronic gadgets), while another wanted to have accentuated 3D printed uppers and heavily engraved multicoloured outsoles. Hell broke through when I was asked by a gentleman the cost of a sneaker production that was made out of a single piece of 3D moulded component. This concept literally had no separation between sole and uppers.

If shoes could be made like that, why would you need a shoe manufacturer? Rather, visit a factory that produces moulded components.

A recent request came from a lady who wanted to design a multipurpose sneaker with the sole divided between 2 components – a forepart and a shocker installed heel. She wanted a tab on the upper that could adjust shocker height between different levels. Well, as if toe spring measurement had no value! Her design was ready, but she had no idea of the materials to be used because her AI platform didn’t care about that aspect. AI simply followed her prompts and generated relevant images.

Why These Concepts Are Unrealistic

While I do not oppose the use of AI to generate futuristic concepts or even to push the boundaries in footwear manufacturing, these young kids simply seem to have forgotten the entire purpose of shoes. They do not know the concept of mould development in sneaker production. Neither do they wish to learn it. Their question is simple – ‘Can you make it or not?’.

AI does not factor in the material and design limitations. It does not understand chemistry and material science. It also does not take into account the ergonomics of a shoe last and the technical design details that a shoe designer has learnt and practiced over the years.

Traditionally, footwear design is anchored in reality. A designer constantly thinks about the supply chain, materials involved, costs, tooling and human anatomy. AI strips all of that away. By inputting imaginative text prompts, digital creators are pushing the aesthetic boundaries of what a shoe could look like if the rules of physics didn't apply.

As a manufacturer, I get strongly appalled each time I come across these AI generated images. The problem lies with the fact that neither the person giving prompts nor AI are shoe designers and both lack shoe manufacturing capabilities. I am happy to say that footwear manufacturing cannot be easily disrupted by the advent of AI. Our industry should remain true to the roots of craftsmanship!

I would love to have comments from fellow industry experts, shoe retailers and most importantly the Indian consumers on what they think of this article. In case you wish to get in touch with my team or experience our shoemaking, do get in touch.
